Interview with hot young thing- Kate Bailey

When i first met her she was wearing the CUTEST jumpsuit I have ever seen and was carrying the most amazing headpiece I have ever seen. This little young lady surely has got all of the talent she needs to leap into any of the industries her passions lie in. Fashion, avante guard head-wear, Make-up… She’s got it all down-pat. And stylishly- as she’s landed a job as being a Make-up Artist for an up and coming fashion show this Wednesday Night from 9pm at the Alhambra Lounge- Mirror Mirror.

We kidnapped her for a short while to ask her everything about anything.

So what is a typical day in the life of Miss Kate Bailey?
Well, its a lot of advertising and a lot of prep work so I can get more jobs. As I do a service, I work to make my clients happy. That usually leads to more jobs.

So how do you advertise yourself?
Well I did a big outlay for printing and marketing material when I first graduated which was in December. I just went and handed out a lot of flyers and business cards and stuff like that, and did deals for new customers, group deals for weddings and student deals and stuff like that.

So how did your career start in the industry? Did you wake up one morning and be like ‘I wanna be a make up artist!’ or was there some history to it?
Well, actually i just didn’t want to be in an office. And I like making stuff. And I like make-up. So I suppose I synced two things in one and that’s how I do a bit of both now. I love the fact that it gives me something to create. And I’m not in an office!

Where do you channel your inspiration from?

Well I like things that are really fierce and really strong. Like, my ideal muse would have big cheekbones and strong eyebrows and be quite gaunt. I know that’s not reality, but It’s what I like in my inspiration. I love John Galliano and Gaultier . I’m really excited, my male models for Mirror Mirror are really tall and strong and fierce. I’m really excited about it.

Do you find it a bit harder to do male models for a fashion show?
Not really. I’m actually having a lot more fun with it really. They’re really open minded too, which makes it a lot easier for me.

What is your favorite place to be in Brisbane?
Depends on who I’m with. I love getting sushi in the valley with a friend on Sundays, but in general I love Paddington- the people are nice, and it’s a cute quirky place to be.

Who’s your favorite fashion designer?
I quite like the guy in Size- he’s cool!
And internationally- I don’t really have a particular favorite- but this season I love Marc Jacobs. He’s doing things a little bit different- using a lot of colours and stuff.

Fave place to eat Brisbane?
I like sushi….there’s one in the valley, Cant remember the name, it’s a sushi train on Wickham St. And the one next to the cinema in south bank is pretty good too!

So where do you think Brisbane sits in the make-up industry compared to places like Melbourne and Sydney?
Sydney and Melbourne have always had the upper hand- however Brisbane is getting there. Also, the models in Sydney and Melbourne are more renound international models, so I think that might have something to do with it also? Not that I don’t love our Brisbane models!

Would you say your own style in make-up has a signature style?
Well when I’m doing jobs for clients I just do what the brief is, however for my own style….. I did a shoot when I was studying- it was free range. So I went quite avante guarde- this is all unedited. I made the headpiece and did the hair and the makeup.

If you won $40 million dollars what would do?
I would buy Prada! And go shopping. Other than that I’d put it in a high interest savings account and move somewhere where make-up is quite renound like Paris or Japan.

Speaking of shopping- fave shopping spot in Brissie?
Princess Polly and My Monkey’s Uncle on Adelaide Street in the CBD. Also Elizabeth St arcade has heaps of cool things- there’s always a lot of new fresh stores. I also love op shopping- there’s a big strip in Windsor that I love.

What make up products do you favor on using?
Since I studied using Napoleon Perdis and I only graduated a short time ago I haven’t had a chance to play around. But from talking to other make up artists I pick up a few tips from them.
However I do love Napoleon Perdis for its foundation- so much easier to match to certain skin types and stuff. I also love MAC. But I’m loving Revlon for their new matte eyeshadows. They’re nice to use.

If you could make anyone ugly with make-up who would it be?
Ummm, who’s someone insanely beautiful??? Angelina Jolie!!

I think I’d make her look really old with layers of latex!

If you could make anyone beautiful or more beautiful who would it be?
Anyone and everyone.

If you could do the makeup for a fashion show of any designer? Who would you choose?
I know it’s not make up, but my absolute dream would be to make headpieces and props for Gaultier…..However doing the makeup for them would be so amazing also!

Now I know you mainly work using Napoleon Perdis, but what is the best and cheapest make-up item you love to use?
Chi Chi have just bought out a new mineral range. I haven’t got around to trying their coloured mineral items, but their translucent powder is AM-AZING! It doesn’t cake or anything and just keeps everything where it should be. And it’s only $24.

Is there any style of make-up that you’re loving right now.
I’m LOVING strong brows and concealed brows. Which is where you paint over the eyebrows completely with a concealer and then re-paint them somewhere more elaborate.

If you could see yourself in 10years- Where would it be?
My passion really varies. So as long as I’m in fashion, hair or the make-up industry then I’ll be happy.
